Our interview with Dr. Deb got Kerry thinking...

Being a kid in today’s world is no easy task. Parenting kids in today’s world is no easy task. What is good parenting? What is a successful kid? While we’re at it, how do we define success as an adult?   As I’ve done with many parts of my life, I’ve had to turn inward to look for these answers.

Webster defines “success” as: favorable or desired outcome; also :  the attainment of wealth, favor, or eminence.  In my old way of thinking, this meant (to me) that I needed to ensure that my kid had the extra edge by giving him every possible opportunity. I had to “enrich” his life with things such as Summer programs, sport programs, language programs, travel programs, summer camps (weeks on end!), college prep programs, and this is just to name a few. It’s crazy. I have three kids. Multiply all these activities by three!

Will this frantic pace REALLY help my kids grow into healthy,  happy successful adults? Or will it stress them out, causing high levels of anxiety?

I came to the conclusion that I would rather have meals together. I’d rather have lazy days of crabbing and fishing. I’d rather their father teach them how to water ski and wakeboard at their grandparent’s lake house during summer breaks. I’d rather take them on family trips so we can experience the world together. 

Don’t get me wrong, I think grades are important, friends are important, team sports are important, and critical thinking is super important. So this is how I’ve shifted our paradigm and what it looks like around our house: 
-They each play one sport during a season. 
-On any given day, we have at least 6 boys at our house. (my food bill is outrageous!) 
-School comes first. 
-Friends are a very close second. 
-You can find us at the park throwing a ball or climbing a tree.

         When it comes to school work, I try to stay in the background, getting involved only when needed. Sometimes a bad grade facilitates a lot of learning.   THEY’VE GOT THIS. If they don’t, we step in. Their successes are theirs, not ours. I think this is the biggest ah-ha for me and I’d like to repeat it… Their successes are THEIRS, not ours. 

So, maybe my kids could be doing MORE. Who knoows, maybe I’m lazy. That’s ok, I’ll own it. We seem pretty happy (most days) and that’s worth a whole lot to me. Ultimately, I want it all. I want them to know what “success” looks like in all its forms. I want them to know they are not only loved, but valued members of this family. I hope they leave our house knowing how to find happiness within themselves. I’m confident the rest will fall into place. 

I have been thinking about this quite a bit after talking to this weeks’ guest, Dr. Deborah Kern. She had it all figured out, A successful life in every sense of the word. The husband, the house, the neighborhood, pregnant with their twins. Then it all changed. It took Dr. Kern about four years to come out of her dark night. She quickly realized she just couldn’t go back to “The Perfect Life”. What she built out of the “ruins” of her life is truly miraculous.  Tune in to listen...
